About the artist
UK Textile Designer and Artist Lily Florence blends her fine art background with textiles design to create unique, innovative printed design pieces, mixing traditional craft and screen printing.
Lily’s love of repeat patterns and detailed drawing originates from doodling meditative patterns inspired by mandalas in early school education. She went on to study Art and Textiles at City & Guilds in London and The University Of Edinburgh, developing her passions for art and mixed media textiles.
Her new collection focuses on detail in print and traditional craft such as etching and embroidery. The title, ‘Inner Landscapes’ comes from a phrase heard in a meditation session. The main inspiration behind the work comes from storytelling in traditional Japanese landscape art, and own photos from Vietnam, displayed on this page.
My creative process is central to the making. My main medium is etching, a long meditative process that includes drawing onto metal with a needle and painting onto metal using stop out varnish, which has a very unpredictable nature. I scan these etched metal designs to create repeats onto different surfaces using a range of printmaking techniques. My collection displays a journey from metal etching plates to surfaces such as silk, paper and wood.
As the soul soothes
The landscapes emerge
A world of its own emerging,
An inner landscape.
